Assisi

The town of Assisi is a vital stage of your trip to Umbria. City of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi, it releases a charm and a spirituality that will capture you.

The visit starts from the Basilica of St. Francis, divided in the Lower Basilica, where lies the body of the Saint, and higher part, famous for the frescoes of Giotto and, sadly, for the earthquake of 1997.

Then you can go to the Piazza del Comune, an ancient Roman forum, as demonstrated by the Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, which still shows its splendor of ancient Roman temple dedicated to the goddess. From here you descend toward the Church of Santa Chiara, where you can admire the her body and some items that belonged to St. Francis.

From the square in front you can admire a wonderful panorama of the Umbrian plains, from Spoleto, Spello, Bevagna, Montefalco, to Perugia. You can continue to visit the cathedral of San Rufino, saint patron of the city, and with the underground Roman ruins.

You can climb up to the Fortress, built by Cardinal Albornoz, or to the Eremo of Prisons, a place of pray of St. Francis. The visit may end with the Church of San Damiano, the first nucleus of Franciscan voyage.
